What were the first mysteries you read?




A lifelong mystery fan, I can still remember the book that started me on this journey: The Secret of the Old Post Box.  

Shortly after that I discovered Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Cherry Ames, the Hardy Boys, Judy Bolton, Beverly Gray and then, ta da!, Agatha Christie.  Mary Stewart, Dorothy Eden and Evelyn Anthony led me to the more romantic mysteries and my current love of romantic suspense.

I recently tracked down copies of these two early favorites.  They aren't quite as good as I remembered, but what memories of childhood are?

My kids and I were reminiscing about the books we remembered reading (or having read to us) when we were young. My daughter came up with The Lonely Doll, When the Sun Rose, We Like Kindergarten, Jessica (Kevin Henkes)and The Story of Holly and Ivy. Those were her "young 'un" favorites; these were from her pre-teen/teen years: Alice in Rapture, Sort of (the Alice series -- Phyllis Reynolds Naylor), Just As Long As We're Together (Judy Blume), Are You There God? Their Names Live On In Flowers

             Those who work with plants inevitably develop a shorthand for describing them: “We’ll need a dozen Stellas for the front border, a couple of Vera Jameson’s and maybe a nice Constance Spry against the wall.” Stella, of course, refers to Hemerocallis ‘Stella de Oro’, ‘Constance Spry’ is a very famous rose, and Sedum ‘Vera Jameson’ (sometimes listed as Hylotelephium ‘Vera Jameson’) is a popular relation to Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (also sometimes listed as Hylotelephium ‘Autumn Joy’). The names are familiar. The plants are familiar.
