The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

This month, in addition to moderating the Garden and Mystery Book Clubs at BN.com, I am moderating a discussion of Nicholas Sparks' new book, The Choice. The discussion group kicked off on October 1st -- please join us!

In November, the Mystery Book Club is going back to Agatha Christie -- this time a Miss Marple mystery: Sleeping Murder.

In December, the Mystery Book Club will be talking about the new Christmas release by Janet Evanovich: Visions of Sugarplums.

The Garden Book Club is more general discussion and book recommendations than discussions of individual books. Sometimes we do have an author visit, though, as when Bill Alexander joined us to talk about his great book, The $64 Tomato.

My kids and I were reminiscing about the books we remembered reading (or having read to us) when we were young. My daughter came up with The Lonely Doll, When the Sun Rose, We Like Kindergarten, Jessica (Kevin Henkes)and The Story of Holly and Ivy. Their Names Live On In Flowers

             Those who work with plants inevitably develop a shorthand for describing them: “We’ll need a dozen Stellas for the front border, a couple of Vera Jameson’s and maybe a nice Constance Spry against the wall.” Stella, of course, refers to Hemerocallis ‘Stella de Oro’, ‘Constance Spry’ is a very famous rose, and Sedum ‘Vera Jameson’ (sometimes listed as Hylotelephium ‘Vera Jameson’) is a popular relation to Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (also sometimes listed as Hylotelephium ‘Autumn Joy’). The names are familiar. The plants are familiar. But who are the people whose names have become synonymous with the plants that honor them?             British plantswoman Vera Jameson (1899-1989) was married into the Jameson’s Irish Whiskey dynasty.
